Hyundai Motor America Reports Record Sales for January

The Fountain-Valley based automaker attributes the 19 percent year-ago increase to continued strong sales of its fuel efficient vehicles including Elantra and Genesis.

Hyundai Motor America received some encouraging news Wednesday, and it can thank its fast-growing fleet of fuel efficient vehicles for much of it.

The Fountain Valley-based automaker reported that sales in January were up 19 percent from the year-ago month, primarily due to continued strong performances by its hot-selling Elantra (up 13 percent) and Genesis/Equus (up 27 percent) automobiles.

“January was a good month for us as Januarys go,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president, national sales. “We set an all-time sales record for the month, saw continued stabilization in the general economy, and witnessed the Hyundai Elantra crowned as North American Car of the Year. All in all, a very solid base to build off in 2012.”

Hyundai sold 15,598 vehicles with a labeled highway fuel economy rating of 40 miles per gallon, and set an all-time record of 42,694 vehicles sold in January. That’s up 15 percent from January 2011 despite tight availability of Hyundais across the nation as consumer demands continues to outpace ongoing production due to capacity constraints.

Hyundai achieved an overall average fuel economy level of 36.7 MPG last month (27.7 MPG label value), up from 34.7 MPG in January 2011, a 5.8 percent increase. That was Hyundai’s all-time best monthly fuel economy performance.

“We finished 2011 with a full-year CAFE estimate of 36.1 mpg, which we think could be an industry-leading position,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “With a full year of Accent and Veloster, and more fuel-efficient versions of Azera and Santa Fe in the pipeline, we'll continue to do all we can to bring affordable high fuel-efficiency solutions to all Hyundai buyers in 2012.”

Last month, Hyundai released details on a new $150 million corporate headquarters located on the same site that it’s occupied for the past 20 years, on Talbert Ave. between Euclid St. and Brookhurst St. The six-story building will feature "floating translucent glass floors" an inner courtyard and a vehicle showroom visible from the 405 Freeway. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013.
