Biker Leads LAPD, CHP on 100-Mile Chase

The pursuit started in L.A. and made its way through all of Orange County before ending near Camp Pendleton.

A motorcyclist dressed in black, with a female passenger without a helmet, led Los Angeles police and the California Highway Patrol on a 100-mile-plus chase Sunday through all of Orange County before finally stopping in northern San Diego County.

The chase began when Los Angeles police tried to pull over the motorcyclist for an unknown reason near Bob Hope Airport, in the Sun Valley section of the San Fernando Valley. The LAPD officers chased the bike onto the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway, west onto the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway, and then south on the San Diego (405) Freeway from the northern edge of the Valley.

It passed the City News Service offices in West L.A. at 1:25 p.m., where
an editor spotted the biker and his female passenger both dressed in all-
black. They were in the carpool lane, travelling about 10 miles per hour faster
than the other free-flow traffic.

The chase was taken over by CHP motorcycles and a CHP chopper at West
Los Angeles. The chase continued past LAX, Long Beach, and all of Orange
County, and transitioned onto southbound Interstate 5 at the El Toro Y.

At 2:25 p.m., the chase was poised to enter San Diego County at San
Onofre, according to KNX radio in Los Angeles.

The bike stopped about 2:45 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near Las
Pulgas Road on Camp Pendleton, according to the  CHP.

KNX radio reported that witnesses told them they saw two people arrested.

So he let a gril ride without a helmet and when he was going to get stopped for it he further endanger her?
I was riding Ortega today and a biker went off a cliff, I'm wondering now if he's alive, it was a steep one and couldn't see where he landed, fire rescue was on way when I left.

One less idiot on the road!

...those two should get down on their knees and thank the good Lord that they weren't being pursued by the Orange County sheriffs...
Rick Smith April 2, 2012 at 02:10 pm
I agree jim capistrano. I remember back in the 70's it was either Neil Purcell or Alex Hernandez as a LBPD motorcycle cop were in a pursuit down I-5 and developed a speed wobble and went down.
Joker Joe April 2, 2012 at 02:13 pm
Cops put the two at risk of death and we do not know why they were chased according to the article.
Did it ever occur to law enforcement that it was not worth putting the passenger at risk of death? I can see where you might disregard the driver, but the passenger???? When does common sense rule?
Joker Joe April 2, 2012 at 02:15 pm
That is where I love to go riding. Ortega. With the Harley it is just a cruise but with the crotch rocket it is a dream ride.
Lindsey Hanson April 2, 2012 at 05:13 pm
I'm going to assume the passenger without a helmet was the reason for the initial stop. It is illegal. However I wonder when it is better to decide to let it slide rather than risk them going down on the free way at 100 mph. The irony in the situation is apparent. If the cop pulled them over for safety reasons (no Helmet) he escalated the threat. What would you do? I'm not sure what I would do.
I ride a MC and I always wear a helmet even in states where it is not required. Some people are crazy.
Joker Joe April 2, 2012 at 05:33 pm
I would not be dumb enough to endanger the two on the bike plus dozens of other citizens in a 100/hr. chase.
You don't have to be crazy to not wear a helmet. I did not wear one for 40 yrs. until it was mandated. Even now many states do not require a helmet and many states have gone back to not requiring it. You sound like a newbe. The people that should be wearing a helmets are not. That is the pedestrians that cross streets. More dead pedestrians would of survived a collision if they only wore a helmet... A lot more than bikers. just sayin

BoBo,you've got that one right - particularly in Laguna Beach where being a pedestrian can be very hazardous to one's health. Almost 30 years of experience finds me still questioning the helmet law - I wouldn't if it wasn't required. The high speed chase is yet another example of bad choices on the part of the PD's more than on the part of the culprit. What a waste of manpower and hours that could have been better spent. Seems that not calling the chase for rain had alot more to do with a few officers afraid of tripping on their own egos. What price glory?
Joker Joe April 3, 2012 at 12:09 pm
O.C. sheriffs would of shot him out of the saddle.
The reason being he was possibly going to "endanger others". Just like the Marine murdered.

I am for freedom of choice on the helmet but when I went to the Laughlin run and crossed into Az. I checked my helmet at the border for $1. 20 minutes into the Az. desert I was sorry. The wind and heat baked my poor skin. I would not use the helmet around town though but someone in Washington that does not ride and never will, tells me I have to wear it.
randall boone April 4, 2012 at 05:17 pm
All you need to do is follow them with the chopper. Then send an orange county cop car and shoot them when they reach for there waist band.( Simple no more speeders)

the article say the chase was a 100 miles long, nowhere does it say hi-speed chase in fact it states they were traveling 10 mph above the flow of traffic while driving in the carpool lane. People should read before commenting

Don't worry about the details.

BoBo ... regarding helmet laws and your comment "someone in Washington that does not ride and never will, tells me I have to wear it" .... There's actually a good reason for helmet laws. If a person is SO STUPID as to get on a motorcycle (yeah, even around town) and ride without a helmet, given 50/50 odds, I'd always take the bet that they don't have adequate health insurance. Thus, given the fact that in our highly cultured and evolved society, if a rider w/o a helmet and w/o adequate insurance happened to crash and needed medical care, guess who would get to pay the hospital (again, a bet that I'd take) and doctor bills?? (hint: It's not gonna be the rider). Personally, being somewhat devolved and uncultured, I'd elect to take this hypothetical rider to the closest birriaria and let whatever's gonna happen just happen ... (not a problem for me since I'm not brave enough to actually consume birria .... considering the possibilities).

One last thought BoBo .... I can't stand the Ortega on a bike (or even in a car) ... Too many people use it as a primary commuting road, and thus there are always lots of cars to contend with. However, the canyons in Malibu are a different story completely. There are roads there, where you can ride for half an hour without seeing a single car (which is quite impressive, at least to me, considering that point-to-point you're between 15-25 miles to the center of downtown Los Angeles when in the canyon). Malibu Canyon Rd. and Las Virgenes Rd. are good to avoid (since they're a primary route in going to/from the 101 to PCH, but Encinal Canyon Rd ... roads for taking a MC don't get much better than Encinal Canyon Rd.
Joker Joe July 2, 2012 at 05:42 pm
I like Malibu more than Ortega also but living in O.C. it is a ride.
Reflecting on your imagined scenarios.... Where did 50/50 odds come from? You made it up, right?? Obamacare is now official so does that mean we eliminate the helmets? We all have insurance. I bet you can make up another excuse besides insurance now for wearing helmets? Right? More pedestrians are killed in cross walks than motorcycle riders without helmets. Should we make all pedestrians wear helmets? I bet 65% have no insurance. More people drown then motorcyclists die wearing a helmet! Should those people be required to have insurance or be forced to have scuba gear. I bet 68% have no insurance. THANK ALLAH FOR OBAMA.....& the elimination of choice.
