Driver Arrested in Fatal Hit and Run

A Costa Mesa man was arrested on suspicion of hit and run when he returned to the scene of the accident where a 65-year-old pedestrian was killed in Fountain Valley.

A driver who caused fatal injuries to an elderly pedestrian, and who fled only to return to the crash site an hour later was arrested in Fountain Valley today, a police sergeant said.

The pedestrian was identified as Harvey Mayo, 65, said Fountain Valley police Sgt. Steve DeSantis. He died at the scene.

Mayo was reportedly in a crosswalk on Newhope Avenue near Southpark Street when a northbound car driven by Ricardo Gomez, 38, of Costa Mesa, hit him.

Police were dispatched to the crash at 12:15 a.m., he said.

Gomez reportedly left the scene and returned approximately an hour later. He was arrested for suspicion of felony hit and run and outstanding warrants.

Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash. Fountain Valley police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at (714) 593-4484.
