Local Woman Victimized in "Grandma Scam"

Police briefs from around Fountain Valley.

A woman reported unknown suspect(s) attempting to purchase groceries with a counterfeit Visa gift card and California driver's license at Albertsons on Brookhurst Street near Ellis Avenue, March 9 at 10:44 p.m. The store supervisor rejected the card confiscated the license and the unknown suspect(s) were last seen fleeing in a red sedan.

An elderly woman reported being a victim of the "grandma scam" on March 9 at 10:58 a.m. Between Feb. 2 to Feb. 5, a man who identified himself as the the woman's grandson called to say he was in a Canadian jail and needed money to return home. She was given instructions by his "attorney" by phone to send $3,000 via Western Union for bail, to expunge his record and to purchase a plane ticket back to the states. The woman called her grandson a few days after and discovered he was never in Canada.

A woman reported $1,070 worth of property stolen from her vehicle on Brookhurst Street near Ellis Avenue, March 8 at 6:09 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) gained entry by using an unknown tool to break the left rear window and had fled undetected with the a purse and coat from the rear seat. Damages were estimated at $200.

A man reported vandalism on his 2001 Honda Civic on White Fish Circle near Newland Street, March 8 at 2:47 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) used an unknown object to scratch "F U" on the the driver's side quarter panel, causing $500 worth of damages. No suspect(s) were seen or heard.

Residential burglary was reported on San Bruno Street near Warner Avenue, March 8 at 8:37 a.m. Unknown suspect(s) gained entry into the residence through an unlocked kitchen window on the second floor balcony and fled with $1,800 worth of property. No suspect(s) were seen or heard and crime scene investigators were unable to recover any physical evidence.

Identity theft was reported on Brookhurst Street, March 5 at 11:23 a.m. when a woman discovered a $410 check had been written and cashed from her account. She had lost her check book three weeks prior.
