Man Dies in Police Confrontation; Allegedly Had Gun

A Huntington Beach officer with nine years on the job shot the suspect.

Huntington Beach police said an officer killed a suspect Saturday and that a firearm believed to belong to the man was found at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The incident, which involved two men, took place near Glencoe Drive and Silver Lane shortly before 8 a.m., a police statement said. The men fled and confronted officers, and the shooting followed.

"A handgun has been recovered from the suspect at the scene," the statement said.

A nearby resident, Dorothy Richardson, according to NBCLosAngeles.com, said she heard an exchange of gunfire, not just shots from one side. She also said she heard a woman screaming afterward, “You shot my son!”

A bullet from the exchange shattered her car window.

The dead man was identified as Eric Marquez, 26, by Ruben Young, who said he was the man's brother, according to the LA Times. NBC said he was from Orange.

The other suspect fled the scene and remains at large. The police said the officer is a nine-year veteran.
