Police to Crack Down on Unsafe Motorcycling

Extra officers will be on duty in Fountain Valley Thursday, patrolling areas popular with bikers.

Fountain Valley motorcyclists should always drive safely, but they may want to take extra care this Thursday.

On July 19, the will have extra officers patrolling sections of town popular with bikers and areas with a history of motorcycle crashes.

During the "motorcycle safety enforcement operation," officers will also crack down on drivers of other vehicles whose illegal manuevers can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Since Oct. 1, 2011, motorcycle-involved traffic collisions have injured 11 people in Fountain Valley.

The deparment is also reminding motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

Riders who want to learn how to ride safer can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.CA-msp.org, 1-877 RIDE 411, or 1-877-743-3411.

Funding for the safety program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
