Thief Steals Los Amigos High School's Baseball Equipment

With a majority of its students from economically disadvantaged homes, the school struggles to replace the loss of mitts, bats, bases and a pitching machine.

A volunteer groundskeeper discovered the theft Sunday morning, said Alan Trudell of the Garden Grove Unified School District. The volunteer had locked
up on Saturday afternoon, Fountain Valley police Sgt. Matt Sheppard said.

The school's varsity and junior varsity teams lost all of their baseball mitts, bats, a pitching machine and other equipment, Trudell said.

It's not clear what the equipment was worth, Sheppard said.

Some of the equipment was bought with booster club funds, and the 30 varsity and junior varsity players lost equipment, Trudell said.

``Eighty-four percent of the students (at the high school) come from economically disadvantaged households,'' Trudell said.

The team needs donations to get back on the baseball diamond, Trudell said.

``The appeal for aid is being sent out to surrounding school districts to borrow extra equipment,'' Trudell said.

The team is also accepting cash donations. Checks made payable to Los Amigos High School baseball can be sent to 16566 Newhope St., Fountain Valley.

School officials are considering holding a fundraiser such as a golf tournament, Trudell said.
