Barons' Softball Team Rallies but Falls Short at Marina
Fountain Valley fights back from 5-0 deficit but loses by one run and can only make playoffs if it earns at-large berth.
Fountain Valley rallied from a 5-0 deficit to get within one run, but the Barons could not overtake Marina, as the Vikings held on for a 5-4 victory in a Sunset League softball game on Tuesday at Marina High.
Errors led to three unearned runs for the Vikings as they built a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning. But the Barons rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth, with senior first baseman Allison Lang and junior catcher Brenda Bott driving in the final two runs before a ground out ended the inning. The Barons were able to get the tying and winning runs into scoring position with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Marina pitcher Tera Blanco was able to work out of the jam to get the win.
The loss puts the Barons (13-9, 2-4) out of contention for sole possession of third place in the league, but they could earn an at-large berth to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs with a strong finish. The Barons will play at Huntington Beach on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
